  • Promotion Tool Lab: Methodology

    There are thousands of web promotion tools, but we focus in those oriented to web development or content creation.

    Steps:

    1) Identification of possible tools to be tested. They need to be original, well documented and offering reasonable promises. We
    consider suggestions from readers and mainly from subscribers.

    2) Publication of the basic data in this blog:

    – tool type (script, software, plugin)
    – platform (PC, Mac, Windows, Linux)
    – purpose
    – claims
    – price
    – warranty
    – testimonials
    – how it would be tested
    – how long test is expected to last

    After the test is done, the subscribers are informed of the result. They are granted access to a forum to discuss their findings.

    This should help to solve the difficult question of which promotion tools should be acquired and used on the sites that need to be promoted. We manage our own sites and many from customers in many countries and we intend to provide the best promotion service available.

    Every week several new tools for web promotion and SEO appear in the market. Most of them can be useless for the average Web Promoter, but a few can bring significant value. Which ones? Hard to tell.

    Every new product comes out with an impressive amount of cleverly designed marketing mumbo-jumbo, mixed with technicalities and dubious favourable testimonials. Knowledgeable testing is rarely performed. Objective reviews are hard to find.

  • Good WordPress rankings

    WordPress is an interesting platform for ranking articles in Google, because all postings are identical in several structural aspects. There are several plugins in WordPress that add positive factors for SEO purposes.

    So far we achieved good rankings with some of our older blogs: DomainGrower and PromotordeSitios (this one in Spanish). However, some postings are very well ranked and others not at all. Why is that? It would be nice to know. And it would be excellent to have a formula for consistent good rankings in WordPress. (more…)

  • Sell software online

    Steps for Selling Software online

    Selling software is an activity that quite obviously, needs to be done online. There are significant advantages of being able to do all these steps in a few minutes: find a useful software product, learn about it, download it, install it, test it, and reach for the credit card to buy it.
    Paradoxically, many software programmers are unaware of the huge resources for selling software online, and do not even have a web site. Or they have a nice one, with plenty of Flash animations, and no elements for web ranking.

  • AdSense Income Calculator

    This is a first approach to the issue of Adsense Income estimation. Most webmasters create sites with the intent of earning money from ads, and usually their expectations are overrated.

    We designed a calculator based in several factors known to influence AdSense revenue:

    – extension of project (the more content, the more chance to earn from ads)

    – language (English paying triple than Spanish, for instance)

    – subject (cars earn more than bikes)

    – Clic-thru rate (CTR). A measure of how attractive are ads for users. Hard to master, but critical for success.  There is a whole discipline called “adsense optimization” that addresses Adsense revenue at the time of writing and designing websites.

    – Ad density (there is an optimal ad density, and it is dangerous to drift away from it)

    – SEO (the site needs to rank top in Google, otherwise it will not earn money)

    – age of project (ranking improves with time, provided we do not do anything punishable)

  • We need an exact definition of plagiarism: suggested formula

    Plagiarism is to copy a source, without proper recognition and authorization. Some degree of similarity is accepted: it can be a coincidence, an involuntary emulation, or an accepted practice. But an important degree of similarity is not accepted and constitutes an intellectual property violation.

    There is no exact definition of when a work incurs in plagiarism, and in these times of Internet and easy cut-and-paste we need to be more precise.
